Boating can be a fun activity for the entire family. When you boat with kids, you boat differently – there’s more to think about. By properly preparing for a kid-filled adventure on the water, you will have a successful day out on the boat.

At Key West Harbour, we see families on boats together all the time! It’s great to introduce kids to boating and the ocean when they’re young. For this article, we wanted to share with you some tips for boating with kids that will help make your trip a little easier.

·         Before you leave the dock, make sure all the children are aware of the safety rules on the boat. For example: no leaning over the rail, no jumping, no running, no sticking your hand in places it shouldn’t be, no pressing buttons, etc.

·         Bring and use sunscreen. If you can, apply it at home or at the dock before heading out in the water.

·         Bring snacks and water. Kids can’t control their hunger and thirst as well as adults, so it’s always good to come prepared with some food and drinks for them, especially if you’re out on the water for a while.

·         Purchase life jackets that properly fit your children. Make sure they are wearing their life jackets the entire trip.

·         Watch your kids for seasickness. If your kids are sea sick, give them Dramamine (if age appropriate), ginger ale, bland snacks, or have them smell peppermint to ease the nausea.

·         Warn your kids about hatch covers, which can pinch their feet.

·         Show them how to use the radio, so if an emergency occurs, they know how to call for help.

·         Pack extra towels and clothes in case your kids get wet. You don’t want them wet and freezing during the trip.

·         Bring a light jacket for the kids in case the wind makes it very chilly on the water.
